Frequently Asked Questions About Horseware Ireland

1. What factors make Horseware Ireland blankets durable and hard wearing?

Horseware Ireland blankets are designed to be durable and hard-wearing through a combination of high-quality materials and meticulous construction features. Here’s a breakdown of what makes these blankets tough and long-lasting:

Materials

Denier: The denier (D) rating measures the density of the fabric. Higher denier fabrics like 1000D ballistic nylon (used in Rambo) or 1200D polyester (used in Amigo) are more durable and resistant to wear and tear.
Weave: The weave of the fabric contributes to its strength. Tight weaves can enhance durability and resistance to pulling and tearing.
Coating: Special coatings on the outer fabric improve water resistance and enhance the blanket’s ability to repel dirt and debris.

Construction Features

Bindings: Twin needle stitching prevents fraying.
Reinforced Stitching: Bar Tack Stitching used at key stress points such as the tail flap, hood and liner loops, and tail strap adds extra strength where the blanket is likely to experience the most wear.
Computer Stitching: Applied to strap webbing, including front straps and side surcingles, to ensure maximum durability

2. How much insulation/what blanket does my horse need?

Here are a few considerations you should make when choosing the insulation/blanket for your horse:

Body Condition: A healthy, middle-aged horse with good body fat and shelter generally does well with minimal blanketing. In contrast, an older or thinner horse may need extra insulation, as their ability to generate and retain body heat can be compromised.

Clipping: Clipped horses lose their natural insulation, so they usually need more warmth compared to unclipped horses. The type of clip and how much of the coat is removed will affect the level of blanketing required.

Shelter: Horses with access to shelter are better protected from wind and precipitation, which can significantly reduce their need for heavy blankets. Without adequate shelter, a horse might need more substantial blanketing to compensate for the lack of protection from the elements.

Indoor Temperature: If the water in the barn isn't frozen, it suggests the barn is relatively well-insulated. In such cases, temperatures inside are likely more stable and milder, reducing the need for heavy blankets.

Individual Preferences: Horses have individual preferences and tolerances to cold, so it's crucial to monitor them closely. If a horse seems uncomfortable or is shivering, additional blanketing may be needed, regardless of the general guidelines.

3. What blankets take liners?

Rambo, New Amigo 900, Rhino, Amigo Bravo, models all DO take liner systems.
Wugs, Older Amigo 900, Amigo Hero 600 & Mios DO NOT take liner systems.

4. What are the differences between Rambo, Rhino and Amigo turnout blankets?

Here’s a comparison of the Rambo, Rhino, and Amigo turnout blankets from Horseware Ireland, focusing on their outer fabrics and durability:

Rambo Turnouts

Outer Fabric: 1000D+ ballistic nylon
Durability: Extremely tough; originally developed for WWII flak jackets.
Strength: 87% stronger than Rhino’s polypropylene and 132% stronger than standard 1200D polyester.
Features: Highly resistant to wear and tear, with a slippery surface that prevents horses from grabbing onto it with their teeth.

Rhino Turnouts

Outer Fabric: 1000D polypropylene
Durability:Stronger than many alternatives, with a unique construction.
Strength:30% stronger than standard 1200D polyester and 193% stronger than standard 600D polyester
Features: Includes a waterproof barrier layer between the outer fabric and fill, which maintains waterproofness even if the outer layer gets damaged.

Amigo Bravo Turnouts

Outer Fabric: 1200D polyester
Durability: Strong and resistant to abrasion, though not as tough as Rambo or Rhino materials
Strength: 42% stronger than standard 600D polyester.
Features: Offers good durability at a lower price point compared to Rambo and Rhino.

5. What linings are used in Horseware Ireland blankets?

Horseware Ireland blankets utilize a range of linings to enhance comfort and functionality. Here’s a summary of the linings used:

Polyester Linings

Breathability: : Polyester linings are designed to be breathable, allowing for good air circulation and moisture wicking.
Smooth Feel: They provide a smooth texture that helps keep a horse’s coat shiny and free of static.
Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Static: Polyester linings in Rambo products have added properties to resist bacteria and reduce static electricity.
Common Uses: Predominantly used in turnout blankets, some stable blankets, and for lining the shoulders of fly and stable sheets.

Microfiber Linings

Cotton-Like Feel: Microfiber linings offer a soft, cotton-like texture, providing comfort akin to traditional cotton.
Breathability: They are breathable and help manage moisture, keeping the horse comfortable.
Secure Fit: Microfiber linings are designed to stay in place, reducing shifting and bunching.
Common Uses: Frequently used in stable blankets and sheets.

6. What is a "denier", and how do you know if a rug denier is "good"?

Denier is a unit of measurement used to determine the thickness and strength of the threads in a fabric. Here's a detailed look at denier and how to evaluate if a rug's denier is "good":

Understanding Denier

Definition: Denier (D) measures the weight (in grams) of 9,000 meters of a particular fiber. A higher denier number indicates thicker, stronger threads, while a lower denier number signifies thinner, lighter threads.
Fabric Strength: A higher denier count generally means greater durability and resistance to wear and tear. For instance:

  • 600D Polyester: common, lightweight fabric used in many turnout blankets. It offers moderate durability and is suitable for less aggressive environments.
  • Rhino 1000D Polypropylene Outer: Extremely strong and durable.
  • 1200D Polyester: Twice as strong as 600D polyester, providing greater durability and resistance to abrasion.
  • 1000D Ballistic Nylon: Even stronger and more durable than polyester, often used in high-wear areas. It’s ideal for very rough conditions and high-impact situations.

Chosing the Right Denier

Evaluate the horse's needs and consider factors such as:

  • Living Conditions: Horses in rough or abrasive environments, such as those with rough pasture or extensive turnout time, benefit from higher denier fabrics. Also consider if the horse has access to shelter for wind and weather protection while in the pasture.
  • Behaviour: Horses that are hard on their blankets, such as those that rub or scratch frequently, may require a higher denier for better durability. Also consider that as a horse gets older, it may require more insulated blankets.
  • Companions: Horses turned out with others who might interact aggressively can also benefit from higher denier fabrics to withstand additional wear.

7. Is an all-in-one neck blanket better than using a blanket with a detachable neck cover?

Choosing between an all in one blanket and a detachable neck cover can depend on the environment your horse lives in (weather, stabling/grazing conditions) and their physical shape and condition. Each style offers different benefits to the horse wearing it.
All-In-One has a seamless all-in-one design for maximum security and comfort offering an even distribution of fill from ears to tail.
Hoods offer the user the freedom to change or remove the hood depending on the requirements of their horse. They can be removed to reflect weather conditions or can be changed depending on the weight of fill required for a given time or season. Hoods also add more warmth to the horse, like a scarf would for a human.

8. There are a variety of types of front closures out there now. Is there a “best” or “safest” type of front closure? Which front closure should I choose for my horse?

When choosing a front closure for a horse blanket, it's important to consider both safety and fit. Horseware Ireland offers several types of front closures, each designed with specific features to enhance comfort and functionality. Here’s a detailed comparison of the different front closures and guidance on which might be best for your horse:

V-Front Closures (Surefit neck design)

Design: Features fixed, non-swivel trigger hook fastenings made from stainless steel. The clip faces the horse’s chest to minimize the risk of opening or catching on external objects.

Advantages:

  • Comfort: Positioned to reduce pressure on the shoulders, allowing for better movement and grazing.
  • Durability: Stainless steel components offer long-lasting performance.

Best For: Broad-Built Horses: The V-front is versatile and well-suited for horses with a broader build due to its adjustable positioning and shoulder-friendly design

Disc Front Closure

Design: Incorporates the four points of the V-Front closure but in a lighter, more flexible form. This patented design is a quarter the weight of traditional metal closures.

Advantages:

  • Lightweight: Reduces overall weight on the horse’s chest, enhancing comfort.
  • Ergonomic Shape: Mirrors the horse’s chest contours and has a flat, smooth surface to prevent catching or hang-ups

Best For: All Body Types: Suitable for various body shapes due to its lightweight and ergonomic design, offering a secure and comfortable fit for most horses.

Classic Straight Front Closure

Design: Features a straightforward, aligned closure with double fastening for added security, reinforced with Velcro for extra security.

Advantages:

  • Simplicity: Easy to use with a reliable, secure fastening system.
  • Added Security: The double fastenings and Velcro offer additional assurance that the blanket stays in place.

Best For: Narrower Built Horses: Ideal for horses with a narrower build due to its
alignment with the point of the shoulder and secure fastening system.

Ultimately, the best closure type depends on your horse’s build and specific needs. Ensuring that the front closure fits well and is comfortable for your horse will contribute to their overall satisfaction and performance in their blanket.
