Spirulina may help prevent cancer
Spirulina’s blue-green color comes from the presence of both chlorophyll and phycocyanin pigments in its cellular structure. These pigments are linked to cancer-prevention abilities. It was proven that 10mg/day of Spirulina extract, three times per week for 32 weeks was shown to slow down cancer progression in hamsters who were exposed to a known cancer-causing drug. An Oregon State University also completed a study in which laboratory animals were exposed to a potent cancer-causing substance which found that animals given a chlorophyll supplement prior to exposure developed far fewer tumors than animals who were not given the supplement. The researchers believe that chlorophyll may reduce the risk of developing skin, stomach, colon, and liver cancers. Phycocyanin also showed potent antiproliferative properties in human melanoma cells and human breast adenocarcinoma cells. In Healing with Whole Foods, Paul Pitchford writes, “Important to note in the area of prevention, spirulina is richly supplied with the blue pigment phycocyanin, a biliprotein which has been shown to inhibit cancer-colony formation.”
It is widely known that cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation cause many both long- and short-term side effects. Spirulina has been reported to promote immune response to counteract the effects of radiation. A Russian Patent was awarded for spirulina as a medical food to reduce reactions cause by radiation sickness. 270 people consuming 5 g/day for 45 days lowered radionuclides by 50%, and normalized allergic sensitivities.
Spirulina may Improve Immune Response Resulting in Allergy Prevention & Antiviral Capabilities
The immune system controls many functions in the body, including enhancing the bodies ability to combat against invading pathogens. What that means, is that the immune system is directly responsible for prevention of viral and bacterial infections, cancer, and allergic reactions just to name a few.
An allergic reaction occurs when cells in the immune system interpret a foreign substance or allergen as harmful. The immune system then overreacts to these allergens and produces histamine, which is a chemical that causes allergy symptoms, such as inflammation, sneezing, and coughing.
Clinical research has shown that spirulina can prevent or inhibit the release of histamines, which would normally be present in the case of allergic responses. The photosynthetic pigment phycocyanin has a part to play in modulating this immune response. It has been seen to have an inhibitory effect on the release of histamine from mast cells during an allergic inflammatory response.
While spirulina is shown to have this inhibiting effect on the antibodies which are responsible for the histamine release, along with other allergic responses, it is also proved to demonstrate dramatic improvement in promoting physiological responses of the productive antibodies that form against proteins in bacteria or viruses.
In a trial published in August 2008, a group of people were administered spirulina orally for 16 weeks. The study determined that spirulina resulted in a modulating effect on the immune response caused by pathogens. Other experiments performed in a laboratory setting support these prior findings and suggest that the effect of spirulina may even afford protection to those with food allergies.
Medical scientists discovered it not only stimulates the immune system, it actually enhances the body’s ability to generate new cells. Important parts of the immune system – bone marrow stem cells, macrophages, T-cells and natural killer cells, spleen and thymus glands – all show enhanced activity. Scientists observe it causes macrophages to increase in number, become activated and more effective at killing germs. Because spirulina increases disease resistance in animals, even in very small doses, the animal feed industry is studying its use as a new probiotic to help replace overused antibiotic drugs in animal feeds.
Spirulina may Enhance Detoxification and Natural Cleansing
Researchers in Japan found spirulina significantly reduced kidney toxicity caused by mercury and some pharmaceutical drugs. Other researchers found rats consuming spirulina eliminated seven times the dangerous chemical dioxin compared to a control diet. Today our dogs are subjected to an onslaught of toxic chemicals in our air, water, food and drugs. Their bodies need to continually eliminate these accumulated toxins. Spirulina has a completely unique combination of phytonutrients – including chlorophyll, phycocyanin and polysaccharides, that can help cleanse the body.
