Missouri Fox Trotter breed origins: United States (Missouri, Ozark Mountains)
Named after its unique, 4-beat "fox trot" gait, the Missouri Fox Trotter is another gaited, American horse breed. The fox trot gait is best described as walking in the front and trotting in the back. Due to the speed and smoothness of the gait, the Missouri Fox Trotter was popular as a stock and cattle horse. Today, the breed is popular as a trail and endurance horse for its stamina, and because of the smooth gait, is widely used as a handicapped or therapeutic riding horse. They are also the horses used by the US Forest Service.
